Compost Collective Leeds

Compost Collective Leeds

At FoodWise Leeds we believe that food waste should be composted and not thrown in the bin, and we are building a city-wide approach to community composting in Leeds.

We learnt from the best across the country and our system incorporates a tried and tested design that: is user friendly; makes lifting the lid of the compost bin easier; is secure (with a code for members); is rat and rodent proof.

Compost Collective Leeds sites provide communities with a tangible way to take action in caring for themselves, their communities and the planet. There are 9 Compost Collective schemes in Leeds in Chapeltown, Garforth, Gipton, Horsforth, Hunslet, Seacroft and Tinshill, with a brand new site in Killingbeck!

OUR AIMS:

  • Reduce food waste
  • Improve soil quality
  • Reduce impacts of climate change

BENEFITS OF BEING INVOLVED

  • Free training & toolkit
  • Free caddy.
  • Access to group knowledge & skills in managing composting
  • Free soil for yourself and your local community
  • A great way to help the planet by diverting local food waste (or Help Leeds reach their food waste by 50% by the 2030’s)

WHERE WE STARTED

Did you know 200 kilos of food waste is produced by the average Leeds household each year?*

And yet 40% of the average household’s bin contents are suitable for composting?**

This is where the aims of Compost Collective Leeds first began to grow.

GROWING THE MOVEMENT

With strong links to the Leeds Food Strategy, the vision for Compost Collective Leeds is to work in partnership with local communities to grow a network of community compost sites across Leeds.

If you are a business, local organisation, community group or community member interested in setting up or sponsoring a local Compost Collective Leeds site, please get in touch with Annie at FoodWise Leeds  annie.whitehead@zestleeds.org.uk to discuss how we might support you and your community.

Composting at home (Garden Organic)

Our approach has been inspired by the model from Brighton & Hove Food Partnership. We’re working now across the city with 9 schemes up and running. And a few more sprouting up in 2025, so watch this space.
